Editor's Verdict: There is an important distinction between how this service works and how a lot of other sites in this category work. The best people searching and background checking websites make their money by offering you a much faster, much more efficient and far more thorough means to search through millions of publicly held records. Bear in mind that this information is all legally available, so you could theoretically track it down yourself given enough time and research. So what you're paying for is speed, convenience and peace of mind. What Background Searcher offers is a list of links to websites, which you could again theoretically find yourself, who might be able to provide the information that you could theoretically have found for yourself in the first place. Their claim to be offering anything worth your money is, therefore, slightly more spurious than with most good background-check websites. A downside of this system is that, because Background Checker only offers links to a series of third parties they cannot guarantee that these organizations will be able to provide the information you seek, or even that they still exist. That said, it does offer a satisfaction guarantee of sorts. It promises that their "payment processor will, at its option, replace or repair any defective product within 8 weeks from the date of purchase", though exactly how that applies to membership of a website is hard to say. Membership doesn't cost all that much and gives you access to all the links on the website. It's a one-off charge, so once you pay you don't have to renew your membership every month or every year. To be fair, given the deluge of mostly irrelevant information available on the internet, expecting people to pay for a collection of useful links isn't in itself an unreasonable idea, at least not until one realizes that there are other sites out there who will do the search for you themselves at no greater cost. The website itself is a bit cluttered with links and text, and really nothing special to look at. It contains a huge number of links to different databases and records websites, seemingly listed in no particular order. This means it may take a while to search through them all to find what you want. Some services are listed several times under different headings. This is convenient in one respect because it makes it easier to find whatever service you're searching for, but on the other hand this also makes the list of resources look more extensive than it actually is. Also, there are really no perks, extra features or handy tools. You're basically paying to use the links and that's it. Again, this would be fine were there not sites that do the searching for you and offer more than just the basic service. You may eventually find the information you seek by going through Background Searcher, but ultimately what you're paying for is a collection of links to other websites. Granted, its a large selection of potentially useful links, but there are services in our top 10 list who will do all your searching for you themselves, drawing on multiple sources, and compile the results for you in a standardized, easy to read format. If using a good background checking site is like visiting a helpful tourist information desk in a foreign city, then using Background Searcher is more like getting directions from a local who then demands twenty bucks for his trouble.
