Editor's Verdict: The Criminalcheck.com website is very spartan, with a yellowish-orange colour theme that has connotations of the kind of overalls worn by many prisoners. The fact that there isn't very much to see on this website makes it very simple to start searching for perverts right away, even if you aren't normally hugely confident on the internet. You don't need to enter any of your personal details, let alone any credit card information, just the name or zip code you want to search on, and that's it. The results come back in about twenty seconds and are very easy to read and interpret. There are two distinct ways to search on CriminalCheck.com. The first is by checking out by name a suspected individual, be it a new teacher, childcarer, priest or clown. Given that some names are very common and you are unlikely to know the middle name of a new acquaintance, this can entail quite a lot of whittling down the list on your part. It can also occasionally lead to situations in which you find a registered sex offender with an identical, or very similar, name to the subject of your search who may or may not be the same person. Fortunately, the results listings include home state and date of birth to help you work out if your suspect really is on the list. Ideally, the search box should really give you the option of including approximate address and DOB in your search too, or failing that an age range, but as the service is free, we can't really complain. The second kind of search is via zip code. This is very simple; by merely entering a US zip you have the option of seeing a list of offenders or a map of the vicinity upon which are clearly marked the residences of any registered sex offenders. There are a couple of limitations to this service, firstly the fact that it is geographically very specific and tells you little about what goes on in surrounding areas, or even where one zip ends and another begins. The second limitation is that several states don't currently disclose offender addresses. So bear in mind that if you live in Nebraska, New Jersey, Rhode Island, South Dakota or Vermont this website may not be of much help to you. This free service will no doubt prove invaluable to many, whether in actively protecting their families or simply by providing peace of mind. There are, in fact, other background checking website that will charge you for neighborhood sex offender searches, restricting access to information that should arguably be freely available to all. What CriminalCheck.com doesn't provide is access to information on any other kind of criminals, and in this respect the name of the site is perhaps a little misleading. Finding out that there are no sex offenders in your neighborhood doesn't necessarily mean there are no convicted murderers or violent drug addicts lurking around, so it's wise not to get too complacent. Note, therefore, that the star rating for "Background Checks" listed above this review represents the site's efficacy at its stated purpose of performing sex offender searches alone rather than the breadth of its background checking services. Similarly, it doesn't offer employment background checks, vehicle checks or any people-finding services. It is, however "powered by" a parent site (Publicdata.com) that does all these things, albeit for a price. There are also absolutely no extras on this site. This is in some ways understandable, but even the FAQ is rather lacking, consisting of only two very specific questions, neither of which will be of much interest to the average user. It's also affiliated with several other sites in this category, including gov-records.com and government-records.com, none of which are sites that we would recommend. In sum, although it doesn't offer a comprehensive background-checking service or any website extras, Criminalcheck.com nevertheless provides an important service in offering free sex-offender checks to anyone who needs them. Whilst this is a long way from being our number one background checking site, it's nevertheless clearly a good thing that sites like Criminalcheck.com exist.
