Editor's Verdict:

The first thing to clarify about Gov-Records.com is that they are not affiliated with the Government in any way. Not that they claim to be, of course, but you could easily make that assumption if you took the website at face-value and didn't look at it more carefully. The site does not have official government backing despite it's domain name. So are the website and the service it provides actually any good?

The Gov-Records.com homepage is essentially one long advert that scrolls down, down and still further downwards, trying to cram way too much information, much of it repeated, onto one page. As a result it ends up feeling like one of those TV infomercial's that seem to go on forever. Brevity, of course, is the soul of wit, and Gov-Records could easily have much more impact if it was a bit more succinct.

This is symptomatic of a problem with the website in general: all the content is plastered on the front/index page. For example, if you click on the FAQ link, instead of a list of helpful questions and answers you will find an e-form aimed at existing members who have questions. The "Contact Us" link takes you to exactly the same page, suggesting that perhaps they were hoping you'd be so exhausted by slogging through the welcome page that you wouldn't look any deeper into the site and find out that all they have to say exists on the front/index page. There certainly aren't any extra features of real substance.

Most people-searching websites only allow you to search within the borders of the USA, but Gov-Records.com also offers searches that cover Canada and Australia. These only apply to people searches rather than background checks, and the choice of countries seems to be fairly random, but this is at least something that most sites can't offer you. Oddly, though, the terms and conditions also suggest that the site may not suit you if you want to see any non-US records. Gov-Records.com also allow you to look further into the past than most run-of-the-mill sites, offering historical death and marriage searches as well as the usual current day stuff.

The membership system is also a bit odd. Ninety percent of background searching websites work in much the same way, but Gov-Records.com requires you to choose one of three levels of membership (Basic, Standard or VIP) based on how many "premium search credits" you want to buy. You then spend these credits on whichever "premium level" searches you require. These searches vary in price so, for example, criminal searches will generally cost more credits than civil searches. If you run out of credits before you're done searching you'll have to buy more, albeit at a cheaper rate than when you initially joined. On the plus side, if no records are found, Gov-Records.com won't charge you any credits.

Non-premium level searches, such as people-searches, death and marriage records checks, business searches and reverse phone searches don't require you to spend any credits but do require you to join. So, for example, if you just want to use this site for looking for old classmates rather than conducting any criminal records searches you might as well go for the cheapest membership option as you won't require the premium credits anyway. This will entitle you to conduct as many non-premium searches as you like.

As usual, the website does everything it can to steer you towards the most expensive membership option on the basis that this represents the best value for money. Which is true, as long as you want to conduct more than a few premium-level searches. As always, it pays to think realistically about what exactly you'll be using this site for and how often you're likely to need it before choosing what membership package you should go for. On the plus, side these are all one-time only charges with no repeat billing, so unlike a lot of background-checking sites you won't find yourself being charged monthly for a regular amount until you decide to cancel.

There are, however, a few cautionary notes attached to this website which you might do well to bear in mind. For one thing there is no free trial, which is a shame as the best background-checking sites are usually happy to let you try their service for free to show prospective customers that they believe in the product they are selling. In fact, the absence of a trial offer can also sometimes suggest that a site is just not up to par.

Admittedly, if you search long enough on the internet you will usually find a few complaints (warranted and unwarranted) about any reasonably prolific company, but the service offered by Gov-Records.com seems to have more complaints than average. Some people allege that the non-premium "unlimited" searches rarely produce any useful results and that Gov-Records.com sometimes suggest you try another site, which will then charge you more money. Other complaints suggest that they found the customer support email address to be unresponsive to complaints and the customer service to be very unsatisfactory. This may or may not be an accurate representation of the average customer's experience of this site, but it's not exactly reassuring.

On the face of it, Gov-Records.com provides a wide range of searches for a reasonable one-off charge. The membership system is a little unusual but isn't too hard to get your head around. Whether the complaints circulating about this site are fairly representative or not, the fact is that there are other websites in this category which are proven to be reliable and trustworthy, so there's really no need to take a chance on using a site like Gov-Records.com.
