Editor's Verdict:

The most important thing to clarify about Gov-reports.net is that despite the name it is not affiliated with the government of the United States of America, nor any other country for that matter. It is, in fact, a private concern, so any implicit trust that the "Gov" tag inspires should be swiftly set to one side.

Actually, this website does a rather worse job of looking polished and official than most other sites that attempt to look official and governmental, and there are a good few of them around. It's nothing special to look at at all, and the website features are minimal at best. There are sample reports to be found, which appear to be thumbnails that you can expand with a click of the mouse, but no - that's as big as they get, making them too tiny to read. Presumably, Gov-reports.net hope that the mere presence of illegible sample reports will subconsciously inspire confidence in their prospective customers. The lack of a FAQ section is also a serious drawback. Whilst there isn't an actual link to the sign-up page there is a prominent search box where you can input the name of whomever you are looking for and that, somewhat perversely, does take you to the sign-up page.

As with many similar sites, it's impossible to get a look at the fees they charge until you have already entered your search parameters. This is a widespread practice amongst background checking sites, but its prevalence should not be a justification for it; potential customers should be able to compare rates at different sites before they decide which one to opt for, and this tactic makes such comparisons rather more difficult. Subscription fee information belongs right up there on the front page alongside all the other reasons why you should choose this site for your background checks instead of the many other sites on the market.

The prices, when you do eventually find them, are higher than with a lot of rival sites, but then they do cover longer membership periods than most - you can choose from one or two years of membership rather than one or two months. This seems a little odd given that most customers will presumably want to run a few checks or searches when the specific need arises rather than continuously over a span of years. As usual with such sites, you are blatantly maneuvered towards the most expensive option, which always seems to be available a huge discount which is being offered today only (no matter which day you visit the site). One possible plus side is that there are no recurring fees, only a one time billing, which will please customers who are uneasy with the prospect of an ongoing drain on their accounts.

On the plus side, this site has a much wider geographical coverage than most background searching websites. As well as the US you can search for records and addresses associated with people living in the United Kingdom, Australia, South Africa and a number of other countries. This, of course, is only impressive if the results themselves are any good - being mediocre locally is only marginally less impressive than being mediocre on a global scale - but more on that later.

Customer support is only via an email form, which is the bare minimum you should expect from any paying service, and has the disadvantage of making it much easier for Gov-reports.net to ignore customer complaints than if they offered their customers a phone line. Be warned: there have been a few complaints from customers in the past who have paid their money and then found it impossible to log in or discovered that the results that Gov-reports.net produced were less accurate and comprehensive than what they found searching by themselves using free, publicly available search engines.

All indications are that this is not one of the best people-searching websites around and that you'd be better off looking elsewhere.
