Editor's Verdict:

PublicRecordsPro.com promises unlimited access to people-searching, public records and background checks for a fairly reasonable price. Unfortunately in practice it is rarely that simple.

On the face of it the website looks friendly, professional and well-thought-out. As a rule, the most ultimately disappointing background-checking websites tend to be very top-heavy, with most of the website content crammed onto the welcome page in order to achieve an overwhelming first impression.

True to form , the front page of PublicRecordsPro.com promises a great deal and goes on at length about why you need - absolutely need - to sign up right this very instant. There is a great deal of sales blurb and a few links to other pages, but the more you read and the more links you click on the more you realize that there isn't a great deal here other than the blurb, a cursory FAQ and a contact email form. Everything is geared towards making anyone who visits this page want to sign up immediately rather than read more or investigate the site any further. If a site uses this tactic it's generally a bad sign.

The registration page containing the membership and fee information is at least reassuringly easy to find - a lot of similar sites won't let you see the membership fees until you've already conducted a preliminary search. There is only one membership option, though the fact that it's called the "gold" membership seems to imply there should be other options available too. Membership is annual and non-recurring but the price they quote you is a monthly price, because of course $2.95 per month sounds like less than $35.40 annually, but note that this is indeed an annual fee which you pay all in one go.

In the past there have been complaints from customers who thought they signed up for a monthly membership scheme but were immediately billed the full annual amount. This is ultimately down to the customer not reading the sales blurb carefully enough but Public Records Pro nevertheless bear some responsibility for this, because the information could be worded more helpfully. The moral of the story is always to read all the blurb carefully before you sign up for anything. Another manipulative sales tactic the site throws at you is that if you try to navigate away from this page without signing up, you get an annoying popup asking you to reconsider. This just makes you even more determined to leave.

On the plus side, there is a satisfaction guarantee. This is potentially a good sign, but the real test with such things is how easy it is to claim on them. Some companies make getting your money back almost impossible and you can usually spot them because they're the ones with just an email address for customer contact, which makes complaints and requests for refunds much easier to ignore than with phone lines or live chat. Sadly, there have been some quite recent customer complaints that suggest this may indeed be the case with Public Records Pro.

Similarly there have also been accusations that Public Records Pro use "bait and switch" tactics to squeeze more money out of their customers. This dubious tactic usually claims to offer "unlimited" searches for a reasonable one-off fee, then responds to search queries with very little actual information and suggests that the user try a higher level search for an extra fee. This is an underhand practice which leaves customers in a quandary: should they forfeit what has already been invested or invest a little more in order to attain the original goal?

Other complaints suggest that Public Records Pro sometimes claims to be able to provide the results you asked for but then provides only sketchy information or sends you on a wild goose chase around various other paying sites that may or may not be able to help. A number of customers have also claimed that once they have signed up for Public Records Pro and paid their money they found it very difficult to log onto the site, let alone do any searching.

To be fair, it is not unusual for even pretty decent sites to have a few complaints lodged against them, usually due to poor communication, misunderstanding or technical failure, and sometimes it is best to give the company the benefit of the doubt. However, there seem to be more complaints registered against Public Records Pro than could reasonably be expected.

Therefore we suggest you look elsewhere for your internet people-searching requirements. There are plenty of other background-checking websites that demonstrate higher levels of respect for their customers and provide a reliable and professional service. Our top ten list of background check websites should provide you with some useful guidance.
