Records Registry USA Review
Features:
Editor's Verdict: RecordsRegistryUSA.com exists to give you fast, efficient access to information on almost any adult living the United States, drawing on thousands of official and public data sources nationwide. You can use it to track friends down, check on the trustworthiness of a new business contact or romantic acquaintance, or alternately you can find out what other searchers will find if they go looking for information about you. Its range of criminal searches is particularly wide, so if you're after ex-cons, felons and fraudsters this may well be your ideal website. The site itself is smartly laid out and feels reassuringly official and patriotic, though the squintworthy text could well do with being bumped up a few points. Whilst this is very much a "Just the facts, ma'am" sort of website, note that it isn't affiliated with any government agency, and is actually run by Complete Investigation Services, a private concern. At times the branding becomes a little confusing - it's easy to slip between Records Registry USA pages and CIS pages and often difficult to know where one ends and the other begins. Consistent branding wouldn't hurt. That said, inputting your search parameters is very straightforward and you can start searching in moments if you feel so inclined. If you'd rather find out a bit about the site and how it works first, you'll be glad to know that Records Registry USA (lets just call it "RRUSA" - life's too short) features one of the most complete and helpful FAQ's we've found on pretty much any background-checking website. There's also a 4 part introductory video to watch, which is a great idea seeing as not everyone who wants to use the internet to run background checks will necessarily be familiar with how such websites work. This is not just a nice extra, given how complicated the membership system is, it's practically a necessity, but more of that later. In the unlikely event that the video doesn't answer all your questions, there's also email customer support to fall back on. The range of searches available here is pretty wide. Every searching site has its particular specialties and shortcomings, very rarely will you find a background-checking website that offers absolutely everything (although there are one or two towards the upper end of our top 10 that come very close), and RRUSA's main strengths lie in its criminal background checks. This isn't to say that their choice of non-criminal searches is particularly lacking - it's not - but felon finding is an area in which RRUSA ranks up there with the very best. In fact, there's so much criminal data available at the click of a mouse that you could easily become morbidly obsessed with following your favorite felons. Naturally, its coverage has weak areas too. As the name implies RRUSA doesn't offer any international searches - its reach is restricted to the borders of the US - and for legal reasons it doesn't offer employee or credit screening services. If either of these are important aspects of what you want from a background checking site, there are other entries in our top 10 that offer either or both of these facilities. Whatever type of search you choose, sample reports are readily available, so you'll be able to see exactly what information you'll be paying for before you spend a penny, which is always a boon. Bear in mind, though, that not all the fields in the report will necessarily be filled in every instance as, fastidious though it is, RRUSA can only find you information that's out there waiting to be found. Public records inevitably contain errors, omissions and distortions, so background checking is not an exact science. As with any form of internet search, you never know quite what you're going to get and may end up with more or less information that you bargained for. To put it bluntly, a lot of background checking sites are out to con you, they will take your money and only give you a bunch of links to other sites in return. For this reason it's always reassuring when a website offers a "no hit, no fee" guarantee as RRUSA does, proving that they're one of the good guys. For logistical reasons, this only applies to some "Direct" searches and gives you an internal credit rather than a refund consisting of actual money, but it's still nice to see. After all, peace of mind and reliability are part of what you're paying for when you use a reputable people-searching website such as this one. Unlike a lot of background-checking sites, RRUSA doesn't endorse the practice of automated repeat billing, so there is no recurring membership as such - you simply sign up for one year at a time. The pricing structure is a little odd and very unsubtly geared to wards making you want to sign up for a one year unlimited search pass. Curiously, an unlimited search pass only entitles you to conduct one of the two kinds of search available: the perversely named "unlimited basic search". The other type of search, "direct searching" requires extra payment. Whilst the value this represents is actually pretty good, the related membership and payment system is a tad cumbersome. When you set up an RRUSA account your membership fee becomes the initial account balance and you can draw on this amount to fund the searches you want to make until it's all used up. Subsequently, you must transfer money from your credit card into that account to pay for any further searches. Presumably this makes sense for some administrative reason, but most background checking websites seem content to let you pay for your search directly via credit card just like almost any other online transaction. Navigating the membership pages and different kinds of searches can also be rather involved, making RRUSA a little more labor-intensive than many of its rival websites. This seems a shame but does at least explain why the website needs a 4 part video introduction to explain how everything works. All in all, RRUSA offers a good range of searches at decent prices, although you do have to negotiate a slightly cumbersome interface to get your hands on the information you want. Note that if you choose a one-off search rather than full membership, this site actually represents considerably less competitive value for money compared to most of the other sites in our top 10. Otherwise, RRUSA represents good value for the repeat user who expects to do a fair amount of searching over the course of their year.
