Sherlock Records Review
Features:
Editor's Verdict: The website is straightforward enough to use. The welcome page greets you with a friendly little logo, a slightly glary color-scheme and a prominent searching-box, so starting your first background check is fairly straightforward. There's also a fairly useful introduction to what a background check is all about. Unfortunately this soon veers into "trust no one" territory, trying to drum up a little paranoia so pretty soon you'll want to run background checks on the mail man, that new guy in the convenience store who looks kind of shifty and even your dog, just to make sure they're who they say they are. The site as a whole could use a decent FAQ, Help or "About Us" section, not to mention some kind of customer support information. These are either completely lacking or very well hidden, which amounts to the same thing. The overall feel is pretty streamlined. Some background checking websites bombard you from the outset with hundreds of complex choices and options, but that's not a problem here. The choices presented to you are simple and few, the main options being either background checks or criminal background checks, though it's also worth checking out the Free Resources tab, which allows you to access a nice range of basic people-finding and information checking services. These aren't as clever or as extensive as those you'll find in the top-rated people-finding websites, a lot of this stuff you can do for yourself online anyway, but they are a nice extra. They include a reverse-phone lookup feature, to help you discover who's been calling you at 3am without leaving a number, which is of note because a lot of background checking websites will charge you money for this service, and here it's free. There's also a handy sex offender search, which provides warning of any dangerous perverts that happen to be lurking in your local vicinity. This is also free (though morally it would be difficult to justify restricting this sort of information anyway). Background checks can be run nationwide or on a state-by-state basis, and you can also key the search by zip-code or via a reverse-address lookup. Unfortunately, Sherlock Records is yet another background checking website that only covers the US. If you want to run a check in any other country (assuming such places exist) there are actually very few reliable sites currently up and running that can do this for you. There are a few listed in our top ten, but some of these are US-based sites that run international checks by enlisting the help of overseas agencies, which means you might have to pay more. So international checks are possible, but you should definitely shop around. If you choose to run a search, you'll quite often find that Sherlock Records runs it using another background checking website. This is usually Intelius.com, which features in our top ten and has been extensively reviewed there. This is fine in and of itself, but raises the question of why not go straight to Intelius and cut out the middleman, except that you'll be doing Sherlock Records a favor by going via them? Essentially, you'll end up paying Intelius prices, which are actually very reasonable, and Intelius will reward Sherlock Records for bringing them your business. This is often how the internet seems to work, but renders Sherlock Records slightly superfluous, at least from the customer's point of view. A downside of this is that, because Sherlock Records don't generally run the checks themselves, they don't set the prices, which makes it difficult for them to give you an idea of what you can expect to pay before you start searching. This is a common problem - searching websites that actually give you a decent price list up-front are like gold dust, though there are a few in our top ten. As with some other background checking websites, Sherlock Records includes a "Background Check News" section. These are generally just a list of reasons why you should definitely run a background check on pretty much everyone you meet, and the News section on Sherlock Records is even more blatant than most. There's also a blog, but this is basically a compilation of the same sort of information aiming to, quite literally, scare up more business. In summary, Sherlock Records can run reliable background checks for you at reasonable prices, but generally act as a conduit to other background checking sites with greater resources, like Intelius.com. In practice it probably makes little difference whether you use Sherlock Records or go straight to Intelius, although Intelius does offer a greater range of services and options. So take your pick.
