Editor's Verdict: Webstigate.com is one of many differently branded but similarly questionable background checking sites run by a company called CIS. In common with most of their other sites, it promises members unlimited access to background checks, people searches and criminal records but is also the subject of frequent customer complaints and allegations of poor service. The home page itself is one of the better designed fronts for the CIS operation. It looks smart and well-organized and for once you are not deluged by a repetitive and hyperbolic sales blurb. There is even a sample report available to view, which is always a good thing, although do bear in mind that in a real report it is likely that not all the fields will be quite so well filled. There is also an FAQ, but it's shared by several other CIS sites and is too general to be really useful. In common with a lot of similar websites, it's quite difficult to find out what the membership subscription rates are until you begin performing a search, which makes it rather difficult to compare websites before you choose which one to use. An unusual aspect of Webstigate's service is that it at least allows you to purchase one-off searches and checks without having to sign up for actual membership, which is fairly useful. There is only one actual membership option, the 1 year "unlimited" search pass, which on the face of it seems very reasonably priced. Sadly, athough the front page indicates that members will receive "unlimited" access to records and reports, there seems to be some kind of "points" system in use whereby your initial fee establishes a balance of credits against which many of the more sophisticated searches are charged. When these run out you will need to buy more credits. This system is not really explained until you have already signed up, at which point you will probably be under the impression that the one-off membership fee will be all you have to pay. This is a questionable business practice and some would say it disrepects the very customers that make the site's existence possible. Similarly, response to customer service requests, which can only be made via email, is said to be almost nonexistent. There have also been complaints from customers who had paid their money and then experienced difficulty in logging onto the site, a problem which is rarely remedied because of the aforementioned difficulty of getting in touch with the company. Often, the information customers receive is also said to be sketchy, incomplete and even inaccurate. It's hard to say how widespread or representative these problems are with the website in general, but the fact that other CIS websites frequently suffer similar criticisms is not exactly reassuring. We recommend that you avoid paying any money to these websites and instead use one of the many background checking sites that actually demonstrate a higher degree of professionalism, customer service and respect.
