Instant Checkmate might sound like a chess guidebook, but it’s actually a website which allows you to track down the details of people in the United States. Its main focus is on criminal records, although you can also use it to find contact information.
When you first load up the site you’re given a ‘warning’ of sorts, letting you know that the details provided are genuine and you should therefore take your activity on the site quite seriously. It reminds users to try to be as accurate as possible, as they might accidentally pull up the wrong data. It’s worth bearing in mind, although there is a bit of a ‘shock tactics’ feel about this as an introduction.
The site lays out its features clearly, letting you know that it can be used for a few key searches. Their reports include up to date arrest records, as well as contact information such as address histories, marriage records, licences and more. This means that you’ll get a pretty decent amount of information on any person you’re interested in, particularly if they have a record with the police.
The site won’t really allow you to do very much without becoming a paying member first. You can perform a very basic search which includes a person’s name and the state you believe that they are from. The system then performs a search for online activity, traffic offenses, arrest reports, misdemeanors, sexual offenses, living relatives, birth records, address information and more.
Searches were quite slow in comparison with the quicker sites around. Our basic search (admittedly throughout the US) took a minute or two to load, which was probably double or triple the time it took elsewhere. Still, the amount of information provided was positive and you could check relevant locations, possible relatives and whether results had been verified, free of charge.
The site protects your identity as you search for people, so you’ll never receive a call from an irate individual asking why you’ve been searching for them. When you click to access their reports, though, you will – yet again – find yourself waiting for data. Between the initial search and accessing a report, you could be waiting some time.
To read a full report you need to be a paying member. Prices are very reasonable indeed, particularly given that you can perform unlimited searches for the monthly fee. The most popular package is the 1 month deal, however, you can make a significant saving if you take out a longer contract.
A longer contract would be useful if you make regular criminal record checks as an employer, but for most people the 1 month contact should suffice. We would prefer it if you could opt to make a one-off payment to see a single record, but sadly this isn’t available. If you just want one record, we’d recommend looking elsewhere.
The fact that the searches are limited to the US (with no immigration records), and the site primarily focuses on criminal records, does limit its usefulness somewhat. Also, the site is slow (far from “instant”, as the name implies) to load records. This can hinder the hunt, somewhat.
Still, if you have the time and don’t have a lot of money to perform criminal record checks, Instant Checkmate is a good option.
